Update

While we are waiting for Mikaela to wake up from here anesthesia, I just thought I would give a little update about what we have learned.
Her MRI didn't show too much out of the ordinary but it did help support the findings of her lab work...her ammonia level is up to 120 (she is usually around 70 and normal for us would be about 30).  High ammonia levels in the body cause people's cognitive skills to not function properly which is exactly what was happening.  Her ammonia level is up because her liver is not able to process it effeciently.  We are hoping to "flush her system" and rid it of the ammonia by giving her extra fluids.  If it gets too high, Mikaela would need to go on dialysis-but that is not necessary at this point.
We will be going to the PICU tonight so she can be more closely monitored.
Here's the new term for the day...hepatic encephalopathy (fancy term for too much ammonia around the brain)
Mikaela is waking up :)  Gotta go.
