Well, as we thought, yesterday was a busy day! Starting at midnight when Mikaela went NPO in prep of getting her new PICC. She did get a few hours of rest before 4:00 vitals and having to go to the bathroom. Once awake though, she could not get back to sleep in anticipation of the PICC procedure-she really doesn't like that! We got word about 8:30 that transport was coming about 10:00 to take her down to radiology for her procedure. We killed time by cuddling up and watching some TV(NOT the Food Network!) and telling stories-some of your names were mentioned :)
When we got down to radiology it was bright, COLD (they even gave me a heated blanet to toss around my shoulders!-don't know why they like it that way but come to think of it, every time we are down there it is CHILLY) and Aerosmith was coming through the speakers. Nice to see some familiar faces in the nurse and radiologist. After a few questions, I told them Mikaela had a request-to get her PICC in her left arm as the last one was in her rt. are and it was still tender. The radiologist was GREAT-he asked her if she would like to take a peek with ultrasound while we waited for anesthesiologist to arrive and see if there was a vein in there that would work. (Mikaela looks at me and again I tell her it is up to YOU and she says sure.) So, he explains the equipment and then puts the gel on his own arm first to show her how it works (of course, she has had so many ultrasounds she already knew this part-but, I thought it was very nice of him to try and take some of the worry away by showing her it didn't hurt first) Then, he put gel on Mikaela's arm and explained everything she was seeing-humerus bone, muscle tissue, arteries and a nice, big, juicy vein that would be perfect for her PICC. (it was pretty cool-did you know that veins and arteries look like black dots and veins close up and look like they are winking at you and arteries stay open) I don't know if it was a good distraction or not but at least she know the PICC would be in her left arm. Once anesthesia came in and they were ready, I don't know if it mattered where they were going to put that line, Mikaela got that sweet, intense look in her eyes (you moms know the look-where your heart breaks because their eyes are telling you "I really don't want to do this, can't you please help me and do something." and you know there is nothing you can do but give them a kiss and tell them it will be ok (or maybe you are telling yourself it will be ok), swallow hard and be strong for them.
So, off she goes to sleep and off I go to the waiting room. When all done I follow to recovery where she wakes up and eventually we get back up to her room where all the dental stuff is waiting! UGH. Mikey catches up with us carring some much requested Frosted Flakes-after 3 bowls, Mikaela is just settling in for a nap when...yep, you guessed it, in come the dental folks to do their thing. About an hour later (3:00), they finish up -now Mikaela is really ready for some peace and quiet-her belly hurts and her arm is very tender at the sight of the new PICC.
Mom, Gram and Luke get here about 4. A co-worker dropped off an awesome meal of homemade mac & cheese, ham, green beans (all souped up -southern style, YUM), homeade bread and bundt cake with chocolate frosting and fresh raspberries. I totally ate way too much-but it was delicious! As much as Mikaela has been waiting to hang out with Luke, she drifts off for some much needed rest so, Luke and I go down to the cafeteria -he is addicted to Ben & Jerry's Peace Pops! We had a nice visit while gobbled up his snack. When we got back upstairs, Vicki had popped in for a visit. Since Mikaela was sleeping, we went to the "quiet room" down the hall to visit. She, Luke and Mikey headed out about 7. Mikaela was awake, had some dinner and painted both of the grandma's fingernails before they left at 9ish.
We watched a little TV and then ...here comes the belly pain -worst of the day. She was given a little exta pain medicine which helped some. She finally fell asleep about 1:00-
Mikaela up this morning about 10:30-had the usual for breakfast (oatmeal, tea, buttery toast), still has belly pain, found out that she has to have her PICC dressing changed-not looking forward to that. Bordom setting in-will need to find some new and exciting things to do today.
